Emergency Readiness Workshop Targets Seniors, People with Disabilities
IRVINE, CA (October 24, 2008): As part of ongoing emergency preparedness efforts, the City of Irvine presents “Emergency Readiness for Special Populations,” a workshop aimed at seniors and people with disabilities.
Eileen Salmon, emergency coordinator for the City of Irvine Public Safety Department, and David Gibbons, Irvine Residents with Disabilities Advisory Board member and member of the Community Emergency Response Team will offer guidance and tips for dealing with emergency situations. This is a free community event, and will be held Wednesday, October 29 from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Irvine Civic Center.
According to the City of Irvine Disability Services Department, empowering seniors and people with disabilities to prepare themselves for emergency situations is a critical part of the community’s disaster preparedness program. Since October is national Disability Awareness Month, the department wanted to take the chance to address the unique needs of this special population segment.
The “Emergency Readiness for Special Populations” workshop will teach these community members and their families three key areas of emergency preparedness: preparation, planning and practice.
For more information, contact Sarah Mitchell, Community Services Leader, at (949) 724-6637.
